Soft Materials Research Center

The 17th International Conference on Ferroelectric Liquid Crystals will take place at the University of Colorado, in Boulder, Colorado, from August 4–7, 2019. The meeting will focus on the fundamental and applied aspects of soft materials with chiral and/or polar structures and properties.

Since the last time the conference was held in Boulder, in 1991, the world has been catching up to the FLC research community: nanomaterials and nanoscience, of which liquid crystal science and engineering are an important part, have gone from being a novelty to a highly active, mainstream discipline in science and technology.

Abstract submissions for oral and poster presentations are invited in all areas involving chirality and polarity in soft matter. Major themes of FLC 2019 will include:

  • design and synthesis of novel ferroelectric/polar liquid crystal materials
  • the twist-bend phases
  • spontaneous achiral symmetry breaking (chiral self-assembly of achiral molecules)
  • fluid ferroelectrics and ferromagnetics
  • blue phases
  • liquid crystals and biology
  • simulation, modeling and theory
  • advances in resonant X-ray scattering
  • industrial applications

Young scientists, including students and postdocs, are especially encouraged to attend. There will be invited and contributed talks, as well as poster sessions, with ample opportunities for discussion and informal interaction throughout the meeting. Prizes will be awarded for the best student posters.

Conference participants will have the opportunity to take advantage of the world-class sightseeing and outdoor activities available near Boulder and in the greater Rocky Mountain area.
